Emma Stone Gets Early Support at Telluride for 'Battle of the Sexes'

LOS ANGELES – It looks like everyone is gushing about Emma Stone’s portrayal of a 1970s-era tennis pro judging by the reports coming out of Telluride International Film Festival.

In “Battle of the Sexes,” Stone plays tennis great Billie Jean King in the movie about the historic 1973 match in which King battled 55-year-old male chauvinist and tennis Hall of Famer Bobby Riggs, played by Steve Carell. In a move closer to the WWE’s loudmouth wrestlers, he challenged the then top women’s player to a $100,000 grudge match that was meant to prove that men are superior to women.

While the match ultimately became more of a circus than a real sports competition, it also helped rally women during the Women’s Liberation movement when King beat Riggs handily. The crowd at Telluride was definitely feeling the love as they loudly approved at the film's screening.

With the early support for “Battle of the Sexes” at Telluride, I’m sure Emma Stone will be in the mix come Oscar time.

The film is set for release on Sept. 22 from Fox Searchlight.
