LOS ANGELES - Universal's buddy comedy with Kevin Hart
and Ice Cube took the top spot in the weekend box office from "Star
Wars: The Force Awakens," which had reigned suprement the last four
weekends. The comedy brought in $35.24 million on its opening weekend,
well below the $49 million the original film brought in on its opening
weekend in 2014.
The
Oscar-nominated "The Revenant" starring Leonardo DiCaprio was second
with $31.80 million for a four-week total of $89.97 million. The
frontier-themed epic appeared to be reaping the rewards of the 12 Oscar
nominations it received on Thursday- including Best Actor for DiCaprio.
In third place was "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" with $26.34 million
for a four-week total of $852.27 million.
In
fourth place was Paramount's "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of
Benghazi" with $16.19 million on its opening weekend. It was followed by
the Paramount comedy "Daddy's Home," starring Will Ferrell and Mark
Wahlberg, with $9.55 million for a four-week total of $129.50 million.
The rest of the top 10 stacked up this way:
6. "Norm of the North" (Lionsgate) $6.84 million on its opening weekend
7. "The Forest" (Focus Pictures) $5.98 million for a two-week total of $21.31 million
8. "The Big Short" (Paramount) $5.30 million for a six-week total of $50.62 million
9. "Sisters" (Universal) $4.68 million for five-week total of $82.12 million
10. "The Hateful Eight" (Weinstein Co.) $3.57 million for four-week total of $47.72 million
